Film & television producer/director.

I’m an award winning producer and filmmaker working in development and production across film and television primarily in the UK and USA.

I have secured commissions from A+E, Amazon, BBC, BFI, Channel 4, Channel 5, ITV, Paramount, Sky, Viaplay and WePresent.

My directorial debut, Baby Lies Truthfully (2020) featuring Russell Tovey, was selected for BFI Flare, this was followed by a commission from Queer Britain to make The Microcosm (2022) featuring Glenda Jackson.

With a background in journalism (VICE, Gay Times, NME) I have an eye for a good story and am adept at developing relationships with contributors and securing access. My first book Out and About with Linden: A Queer Archive of the North (2022) is now available as a second edition through Pariah Press.

Testimonials

Joe is an extremely able and talented Producer - quick to initiate, grasp and develop ideas from the words on paper into living and breathing programmes. Relative to his years he has an understanding of what commissioners want and all the components that elevate an idea from the ordinary into something 'must-have'. In production Joe displayed a similar passion and skill set that put him at the heart of the production. Whatever the schedule or editorial demands he delivered the goods. Most importantly, Joe makes work fun and was a joy to have on the team.

Eve Kay, Executive Producer

Joe is quite simply one of the most dedicated and smart-thinking young creatives I have had the pleasure of working with. Combining an impressively encyclopaedic knowledge of broadcaster schedules, ratings and needs, with an instinct for emerging sociological trends, he has an incredible skill for identifying opportunities and manipulating raw material into viable programme propositions. Joe is a very disciplined thinker, extremely diplomatic and capable in access negotiations of all hue, and can be relied upon to pre-empt most production issues in his development process, and to deliver ideas that are producible as well as thoroughly commissionable.

Jago Lee, Creative Director

Joe is a highly motivated media professional with a strong work ethic. He has a very good mind which he puts to good use in terms of developing and writing proposals. Joe has an excellent grasp of the industry and commissioning.

He has a lively and humorous personality and is great as a team player or can work effectively alone as a self starter.

Peter Hoare, Pier Productions MD

Joe’s incredibly smart, has a fantastic knowledge of TV and a real passion for coming up with new ideas and approaches. He’s very adaptable too – while with us he worked across docs, formats and daytime – and as happy directing a taster shoot or casting contribs as he is running brainstorms or writing treatments. He’s a strong and confident pitcher in commissioner meetings, a real self-starter and thrives on being given responsibility and ownership of projects. He’d be an asset to any team.

Patrick McMahon, BBC Factual Entertainment Commissioner

Joe is a very talented development producer. He is hungry, committed and bright. He is a great ideas generator, proven with gaining access to a range of places and people and writes a strong treatment. I would hire him again.

Kitty Walshe, Remarakble (EdemolShine) MD

Joe’s a brilliant development producer. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of current TV, understands commissioners’ needs, is fizzing with ideas, and turns out punchy, persuasive treatments at dizzying speed. He’s also an incredibly fun colleague who injects a huge amount of energy and creativity into a team.
